One of them was when my class prepared for a group singing competition of our school. In order to win the competition, we went all out for it. During the two weeks before the competition, we seized every chance to practise singing in our free time, and our music teacher offered to help us improve our singing skills. Although it was a demanding job, every participant took it seriously and did their best. Thanks to our hard work, we won the first prize. Hearing the exciting news, we were all wild with joy. The moment we got the prize, an old saying hit my mind?No pains, no gains. Only then did I realize that our efforts would pay off as long as we worked hard. 10) W: I taught in Shenzhen, China, and I thought I had prepared myself pretty well with the necessary travel books and my helpful Chinese-Japanese roommate. I was really excited about teaching because it was my first paid job. I began each class by introducing myself. I could see the excitement in my students’ eyes because they had a real American girl to teach them. Their warm welcome made me feel comfortable, and so I let them ask me some questions. To my surprise, I was asked questions like “How old are you?” “ Are you married?” “ Why did you come to China?” I was really surprised. I couldn’ believe that the students could ask such personal questions t and expect honest answers. After this happened in several classes, I stopped giving the students chance to ask me these questions. Later I found out that these questions are acceptable in China. Once I realized the students didn’t mean to be impolite and actually cared about me, I felt much more com-fortable about my first experiences.
