A What will man be like in the future-in 5,000 or even 50,000 years from now? We can only make a guess, of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is today. For man is slowly changing all the time. Let us take an obvious example. Man, even five hundred years ago, was shorter than he is today. Now, on the average, men are about three inches taller. Five hundred years is a relatively short period of time, so we may suppose that man will continue to grow taller. Again, in the modern world we use our brains a great deal. Even so, we still make use of only about 20% of the brain’s capacity. As time goes on, however, we shall have to use our brains more and more and eventually we shall need larger ones! This is likely to bring about a physical change too: the head, in particular the forehead, will grow larger. Nowadays our eyes are in constant use. In fact, we use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over a very long period of time it is likely that man’s eyes will grow stronger. On the other hand, we tend to make less use of our arms and legs. These, as a result, are likely to grow weaker. At the same time, however, out fingers will grow more sensitive because they are used a great deal in modern life. But what about hair? This will probably disappear from the body altogether in course of time because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. In the future, then, both sexes are likely to be bald! Perhaps all this gives the impression that future man will not be a very attractive creature to look at! This may well be true. All the same, in spite of all these changes, future man will still have a lot in common with us. He will still be a human being, with thoughts and emotions similar to our own.

B In the 1970s many African-American radio stations began playing disco music; however, the black community didn’t respond well to these changes. It was during this time that DJs at block parties began to mix up funk, disco, and soul music styles to create a new one. The DJs started emphasizing the percussion (敲击), or drum beat, in the songs because that was the easiest part of the song for the partygoers to dance to. They also began using audio mixers to change and extend the beats. DJs later began to dub (配音) other music into these drum beats, and they later added the techniques of scratching (刮擦) and mixing. Today, the influences of hip hop can be seen all over the world, and different forms of DJing, emceeing, graffiti art, and breakdancing (霹雳舞) can be found in almost any country. ( )

D “It hurts me more than you,” and “This is for your own good.” These are the statements my mother used to make years ago when I had to learn Latin, clean my room, stay home and do homework. That was before we entered the permissive period in education in which we decided it was all right not to push our children to achieve their best in school. The schools and the educators made it easy on us. They taught that it was all right to be parents who take a let-alone policy. We stopped making our children do homework. We gave them calculators, turned on the television, left the teaching to the teachers and went on vacation. Now teachers, faced with children who have been developing at their own pace for the past 15 years, are realizing we’ve made a terrible mistake. One such teacher is Sharon Klompus who says of her students-“so passive”-and wonders what happened. Nothing was demanded of them, she believes. Television, says Klompus, contributes to children’s passivity. “We’re not training kids to work any more,” says Klompus. “We’re talking about a generation of kids who’ve never been hurt or hungry. They have learned somebody will always do it for them. Instead of saying, go look it up, you tell them the answer. It takes greater energy to say no to a kid.” Yes, it does. It takes energy and it takes work. It’s time for parents to end their vacation and come back to work. It’s time to take the car away, to turn the TV off, to tell them it hurts you more than them but it’s for their own good. It’s time to start telling them no again. ( )
  48.Children are becoming more inactive in study because . A. they watch TV too often C. they have too many duties ( B. they have done too much homework D. teachers are too strict with them
)
  49.By “permissive period in education” the author means a time . A. when children are allowed to do what they wish to B. when everything can be taught at school C. when every child can be educated D. when children are permitted to receive education
(
)
  50.The main idea of the passage is that . A. parents should leave their children alone
B. kids should have more activities at school C. it’s time to be more strict with our kids D. parents should always set a good example to their kids
E Britain almost more than any other country in the world must seriously face the problem of building upwards, that is to say, of providing a great part of its population with high blocks of flats. It is said that the Englishman is against this type of existence, but if the case is such, he does in fact differ from the people of most countries of the world today. In the past scores of years our own blocks of flats have had something to do with the lower-income groups and they have lacked the basic facilities, such as central heating, constant hot water supply, electrically operated lifts from top to bottom, and so on, as well as such details, important notwithstanding(尽管), as easy facilities for dealing with dust and rubbish, and storage places for baby carriages on the ground floor, playgrounds for children on the top of the buildings, and drying grounds for washing. It is likely that the argument regarding flats vs individual(个人的) houses will continue to rage on for a long time as far as Britain is concerned. And it is unfortunate tha
