Learning Objectives

  1.
Talk about all kinds of robots with some pictures and questio ns and try to give the definition of a robot, and know about some vocabulary, such as industrial robots, household robots, entertainment robots, etc. (questions : How many kinds of robots are there in life ? What kind of robot do you like b etter? What is a robot? )

  2.
Predict what a short story is about according to the pictures on textbook and questions.
(E.g. Where would you find each robot? What does each one do? Do you think it is possible for a robot to think for itself? to have feelings ? to have its own n
eeds and desires ? to look and feel like a human being ? )

  3. Read the text to understand the details of the passage and list Tony’s characteristics that were similar to and those that were different from those of a human being.
Teaching procedure
Stage 1 Warming-up
Step 1 Talk about all kinds of robots with the pictures presented on the scre
en by the T (industrial robots, household robots, and entertainment robots, etc.)
Step 2 The T asks several Ss the questions. (Do you like robots? Wh
at kind of robot do you like better? What is a robot? Etc.)
Stage 2 Can you think of any other type of robot?
Step 1 Ss discuss the questions with the pictures of robots on textbook in gro
ups. (E.g. Where would you find each robot? what does each one do? Do you think it is possible for a robot to think for itself? to have feelings ? to have its own needs and desires ? to look and feel like a human being ? )
Step 2 Ss report in groups about the questions. (Ss may need the T’s help.)
Stage 3 About the Tony (a robot) and Claire
Step 1 The T instructs Ss to scan the text with the questions. a. b. What did Tony look like? What did Tony do to make Claire and her home elegant?
Step 2 Ss exchange in pairs and then report the answers in class. Step 3 The T explains some useful or difficult words and phrases, such as test out , favor, absurd, ring sb up , affair, leave sb alone, etc.
Stage 4 How can we tell Tony’s characteristics that were similar to and those that were different from those of a human being.
Step 1 The T instructs Ss to read the text carefully and fill in the occasions when Claire had these feelings.
