Lesson plan interpretation SEFC B1A Unit 3 Reading
Good morning, everybody! It’s my pleasure to interpret my lesson here today. The lesson plan I am going to talk about is from SEFC Students’ Book 1A Unit 3 Reading .I will explain how to teach and why I do it in such way. There are 4 aspects, as follows: understanding of the teaching material, teaching methods and studying ways, teaching procedures.

  1. Understanding of the teaching material
This period is about reading. It talks about two kinds of adventure travelhiking and rafting. At first sight, someone maybe think it’s a kind of special adventure travel and it is hard or impossible for us to experience in daily life. Just to the opposite, they are close to life. Mountain climbing belongs to the hiking, while we can also do rafting in Nanxi River, in Wenzhou. Let them know they are easily access to these two kinds of adventure travel, which can reduce the difficulties of the text. At the same time, it can liven the class. On the whole, we can analyze the text from “3w” questions, namely: why, where and what. (Why do people travel? where does adventure travel happen? What are needed?) In order to fulfill the learning task of the period, I make out the 3 objectives, as follows:
a) Knowledge objectives
After learning this period, students should have a general idea about this text and master the “3w” questions. If one day, they have access to one of the adventure travels, they can make full use of what they learned in this period. At the same time, they should be familiar with some useful words and expressions such as experience, equipment, get away from, watch out…Also they should have some basic knowledge about attributive clause, for example, they are capable of finding the attributive clauses from the text.
b) Ability objectives
The class should be student-oriented. But they are not familiar with my teaching method, and they do not get into the habit of raising hands. So even though they know the answer to the question, there is no or little response from students .So I need to encourage them to read or ask them to answer the question all together. I will conduct them in this way to find the topic sentence and summarize or retell the passage in their own words.
c) Moral objectives
As we know, the adventure travel gets the name because of danger, so we should encourage them to be careful when doing adventure travel. If possible, we should educate them to give a hand to someone when she/he is in danger.

  2. Teaching methods and studying ways
Communicative approach is adopted in this period. We will get them across by continuous raising questions. Their answer to my question will lead to another question. I will use a tape recorder as my teaching aids.

  3. Teaching procedure
Let’s move to the third aspect teaching procedure. It includes 4 steps: step1: lead in, step 2:reading, step3: consolidation, step4: homework
Step1: lead in (6minutes)
From the first period, I have already known most of the students like traveling. Then I will ask them to give me reason why they like traveling. This is easy for them to do because it’s close to life. It can also help student so get mentally prepared for the text. During this time, they may give out many reason, such as “
  1.relax, have a rest,
  2.broaden one’s mind,
  3.enjoy the beautiful scenery and so forth.” If one of them “to experience excitement” is not mentioned, I will give some hints, such as “do you know bungee jumping?”It is natural for them to get the answer “to experience excitement.”(During the class discussion, I write down all the answer on the blackboard) then I sum up all the reasons and ask another 2 questions: “which kind of travel can help them to experience excitement?” and “what does the adventure travel mean?” It can stimulate their interests to read the text and try to find the answer to check whether their guess is right or not.
Step2: reading (30 minutes)
Here I adopt the up-down reading model. Students are asked to get the general idea first, then down to some details. The step can be divided into 2 parts: fast reading and careful reading.

  1) Fast reading (4minutes)
When they do fast reading, they are asked to finish exercise 1 in the page 18,most of which are simple but thry can tell them the main points of the text. It can help them have a good understanding of the text. 2minuted later, I planed to check the answer one by one. When we moved to the second sentence, I found some of them couldn’t finish the exercise by themselves. So I ask the whole class to answer the question all together. Obviously the efficiency is raised. At that time, what they get is general one but not specific one. So I ask them to read the text paragraph by paragraph carefully. And move to next step by one question: do you want to know more about adventure travel?

  2) Careful reading (26 minutes) a) The first part adventure travel (6 minutes)
I will play the tape recorder for them, when they are listening to the tape, they are asked to find the topic sentence of this part. It’s easy to find the topic sentence, because it’s given in the first sentence. Then I will say something about how to find a topic sentence. Then students are asked to find the answer to the question (namely the topic sentence) “why do people travel” then ask them to make a contrast these reason with what we write down on the blackboard. It can help to give them a more vivid comparison and easy to learn the reason by heart. Then we move to the next part with another question: “how many kinds of adventure travel are mentioned here? What are they?”
b) The second parthiking (10 minutes)
Students are asked to finish reading this part in 2 minutes. After reading, they more or less know something about hiking, it’s time to check how many information is stored in their brain. I ask them to look at he picture in the page 17,and ask them the following questions: What are they doing? Where are they now? Is the mountain only place to visit when hiking? What do they carry when hiking? (Explain some new words: backpack, equipment) What else do they need? How many people are there? (So it is a popular activity.) Why does hiking attract so many people? From those questions, we get some information about places, equipment, cost, and skills needed and so on. I will write them all down on the blackboard. “With so many advantage, it attracts lots of people go hiking .at the same time, it also has disadvantagedanger.” Then it is natural for us to move to the next paragraph about some basic tips for successful hiking. At first I will ask them to find what kind of tips are mentioned here and read them out together, then give me your opinion about why such tips are needed. I will explain them one by one. I will take the chance to educate them to be warm-hearted and give a hand to anyone who is in danger.
c) The third partrafting (10 minutes)
“There are two popular activities mentioned here, except the hiking, what’s the other?” Naturally, we move to the last part. Students also are asked to read it carefully in 2 minutes, and then try to answer some questions: What’s raft? How many kinds of rafting mentioned here? What’s the difference between them? Why does the whitewater rafting get such strange name? Similarly, some questions are raised:
What are they doing? What kind of rafting are they doing? How do you know? (The color of the water and the speed of the water) From the above information, we know it’s dangerous. What should they need to be safe when rafting? (Life jacket, skill to handle the raft and paddle, and how to get in and out of the raft, how to swim and so on) From the picture, we also get some information about rafting, such as “ places, equipment, cost, and skills needed and possible dangers” Then I will sum up what we learn about the whole text.
Step3: Consolidation (8 minutes)
Asking students to retell the text is a good way to consolidate what they learned in this period. Before ask them to do it, I will set an example for them. I retell one part of it, and some information is given on the blackboard. I will ask one or two students to do the job. After retelling the text, I will raise one question “ have you ever done hiking? If someone says ‘no’, I will tell him I believe you do.” mountain climbing is a kind of hiking. And we can do rafting in Nanxi River, in Wenzhou. I will let students know the adventure travel is close to life and easy to experience. So it is important for us to learn the text by heart and make good use of the knowledge about it when needed.
Step 4:homework (1 minute)
a) Underline the important phrasea or words or sentences of each paragraph E.g. “Watch out for danger” b) Try to finish the vocabulary in the page 99 and reading in the page 1
