How to Raise Pupils' Interest in Primary School English Teaching
ABSTRACT:
This research paper concentrates on several ways of raising pupils' interest in primary school English teaching. The paper takes the new view that teachers should adopt pupil-centered teaching methodology instead of teacher-centered teaching methodology to evoke students' learning enthusiasm, and employ every means of teaching to achieve this aim such as listening and speaking; acting; singing songs; playing games; role-playing, etc. These interest-arousing methods are elaborated in the main body of the paper in terms of their significance and suggestions to implement them. The paper is composed of six major parts apart from introduction and conclusion. The first part deals with listening and speaking as very important skills for beginners. The second part focuses on acting which is not only advantageous to class study, but also beneficial to the development of pupils’ physical and psychological health. The third part presents the view that songs can stimulate pupils' interest and develop learners' language abilities. The fourth part is about playing games that is suitable for children and very useful and important for evoking pupils’ learning interest. The fifth part centers on role-playing that is intended for the overall learning language passion of learners. The sixth part emphasizes the necessity and significance of application of teaching and learning resources. The conclusion restates the thesis of the paper explicitly stated in the introduction and then highlights the ways in raising pupils' learning interest in elementary school English teaching. KEYWORDS: Interest-arousing methods; pupils; English learning

I. Introduction
Every child is an individual, developing at his/her own pace and differing in needs, abilities, interests, cultural influence, learning patterns, and behaviors. These differences, therefore, must be taken into account in choosing appropriate teaching methods and activities in the classroom. And how to teach the variety of children effectively in a single classroom? This is the major concern of the primary English teachers. For a long period of time in the history of English teaching, teachers in China are all geared to operate with the traditional teacher-centered approach, in which instructions are almost entirely under the control of the teaching staff in English class teaching. Language teachers are seen exclusively as individuals who hold and transmit language. They are not only directors of the teaching process, but also the mere instruments of the expert who provides a method to be implemented in the classroom. That means, they possess the kind of control over the amount, sequencing, and frequency of usage of the items the learners produce or receive. This kind of forced-feeding method of teaching plays an unfavorable role in English teaching. One unavoidable consequence is that the pupils are on an inactive and negative footing. And they are extremely satisfied with depending upon the skill and ability of the teacher. When they lose the learning interest, teaching is vain. Stevick once said:" it is vitally important to place 'learning principle' before 'teaching principle'.'' So, while conventional approach is dominated by teacher, the pupil-centered approach is dominated by teacher in modern teaching. Some modern psychologists believe that in class, the teacher plays supportive rather than central roles, which is helpful to evoke pupils' interest. That means, teachers are the facilitators of their pupils' learning, and they are monitor, counselor, consultant, etc. The role of the teacher is that he must be concerned with providing an environment that will supply the appropriate sort of input and in which the learner can engage in creative interaction, thus assisting the learner to develop a natural capacity to communicate in another language. That is to say, the starting point of teaching should be the pupils and they are the active and positive participants in teaching process.

How to Raise Pupils’ Interest in Primary School English Teaching
Such a method of teaching is beneficial to cultivate the pupils’ ability to analyze and solve concrete problems independently, to help develop their ability to work things out for themselves, to foster their ability to study on their own and to give scope to the pupils' initiative and creativeness. Therefore, in class, teachers should insist on pupil-centered teaching methodology and change the approaches continuously. It is widely accepted that the teacher is only a guide--keeps the pace of work uniformly fast, maintains an active businesslike atmosphere in class. What’s more important is to guide them in learning by themselves, to train them in their learning strategies which are an indispensable element in their learning of a foreign language, to give them more time to make their own contributions to the classroom communication, to advocate extra curriculum activities and to stimulate their consciousness of becoming participants actively. On the other hand, pupils should be able to act as leaders, never merely sitting like empty bottles waiting to be filled! You will have no appetite if you eat a certain kind of delicious food every day. Similarly, the pupils will become tired of the teaching if you use the same teaching method in every class, even if it is completely perfect. So the teachers have to use various kinds of teaching methods to make the teaching task fulfilled. Through putting to use all kinds of teaching forms, such as, listening and speaking; acting; singing songs; playing games; role-playing, teachers need to find new way to give priority to promoting activities to arouse pupils' learning interest. All these forms can help make the English class interesting and lively, and they can also attract the pupils.

II. Methods of Raising Pupils’ Interest in Primary School English Teaching

  1. Listening and Speaking
Listening and speaking are very important skills for beginners to develop their English learning. Winitz and Reed said:" a host of facts show that children begin learning their native language by understanding through listening. They comprehend the language before they can speak it. Language teaching should not violate this theory." With primary school pupils, the speaking and listening skills receive most of the attention. It is better that teachers let them listen and understand the language first. And let them speak gradually when they feel ready and comfortable with it. In fact, listening and speaking are always used inseparably in real life situations. However, listening is an important basis for speaking.

  1.1 Listening
(
1). The teacher should lay stress on imitating the tape-recorder, and improve the quality of listening. In class, pupils are asked to first listen to the tape recordings or watch TV in English, which can enable them to get familiar with foreigners' pronunciation or tone, then repeat and memorize it. They must imitate the model English and achieve correct and standard pronunciation, intonation, stress and rhythm. If so, it will improve pupils' quality of listening English efficiently. (
2). The teacher must pay attention to the class teaching, and cultivate the habit of listening. In teaching, listening should be the chief means of teaching at the beginning and intermediate stages. So, as for teachers, they must insist on teaching listening in class,

which is beneficial to focus the pupils' attention, temper their capacity of perception and cultivate their imaginative power and the ability of thought. While the teachers teach new lesson, they adhere to let the pupil read the questions about the content of the dialogue, then hear a model dialogue one or more times, which is on the tape. The pupils just listen and try to understand the meaning of the dialogue with the help of the teacher's gestures, mime, context or situation established in advance. At last, they find out the answers and repeat the sentences that are related to those problems. In this way, the pupils will form a habit of careful listening. And they will arouse the learning motivation of English listening naturally, as long as they make unremitting efforts. (
3). Both teachers and pupils use English in class. Both teachers and pupils use English in class everyday. The teachers speak only the target language. Pupils may use either the first or second language. If they choose to respond in the second language, their errors are not corrected unless meaning is affected. (
4). The teachers have to use various kinds of teaching forms to arouse the learners' listening interest. Interest is the mainspring of incentive. Interest is the foundation of all mental activities. Its very nature is to lead to thought and action. Grown Ardently, interest becomes enthusiasm, "without which," says Emerson, "nothing great was ever accomplished." Pupils are naturally curious and active. They are full of enthusiasm and often show a lot of eagerness to participate. If pupils are happy, feel secure and in a relaxing environment they are more likely to enjoy listening activities that include listening activities, such as, listening and doing coloring, numbering, ticking, pointing, or matching. Moreover, these activities can help develop children's real-life listening skills and arouse their listening interest.

  1.2 Speaking
Language is primarily spoken. This is why the teaching of language, as an art with imitating nature, must use the spoken or phonetic form of words as the primary means for teaching reading. Reading aloud should be the first way of testing reading comprehension, of making the learner familiar with the role of punctuation marks, or engaging the learner in the full emotional experience that literature ought to yield, or providing an appreciation for the cadenced and hence ordered character of all works of the mind. Reading aloud can be an excellent homework assignment as well. Parents and other siblings can easily listen for five minutes a day. This is an excellent way to show children that reading is important to the family, too. Then they'll be more interested in reading. As Dr. Otto Willman says, reading aloud is "a valuable asset of instruction and a capital of which the teacher should make the most profitable use. The teacher, who can do justice to a story, approaches in power the rhapsodist. The pupils will not only listen to her, but will hang breathlessly upon her every word as upon a rhapsodist's. In this way the teacher will not win their interest, but infuse into their soul sympathy
