Main Idea
After having gone through a painful process, the child was finally saved from sin, but instead of feeling joyous, he felt miserable, because of disillusionment.
Summary of the text
Langston Hughes’, as a child of , was disillusioned with religion. The boy, influenced by the people around him especially , firmly would come in person to believe that save him. Yet, he was astonished to find that other children were ‘saved’ either because or because . Only he, the and boy kept on waiting for the arrival of Jesus, which not but also disappointed the only delayed adults. Finally, in order to , the boy lied and then was ‘saved’. But his was completely shattered.
In what sense was the author saved?
He was saved from sin in an ironic sense. He was compelled to commit a sin in order to be saved from sin.
Why do they hold a special meeting to save the children?
Children are born with a sinful nature. Children are responsible for the sins they commit. Children need help to cope with the negative influences of today’s society.
What must children do to be saved? Admit they have sinned. Claim Jesus as their Savior. (Commit themselves to Christ.) Believe God loves them and sent His Son, Jesus to save them from their sins.
Do you think small children can really come to Christ to be saved?

Part One?before the salvation
Why did the child’s aunt speak of the special meeting for days ahead?
Being a pious Christian, she had a deep respect and boundless love for God, hoping that God would bless and save her whole family. Now that there was an opportunity for the soul of her nephew to be saved, she couldn’t help feeling excited. She was looking forward to the special meeting for children, unable to hide her eagerness.

She told him that he could see and hear and feel Jesus in his soul when he was saved. Jesus would come to him and the child would see a light and feel different inside. Being a child of 12, he believed her and waited in great earnest for Jesus to come into his life.
