I have just moved to a house in Bridge Street. Yesterday a beggar knocked at my door. He asked me for a meal and a glass of beer. In return for this, the beggar stood on his head and sang songs. I gave him a meal. He ate the food and drank the beer. Then he put a piece of cheese in his pocket and went away. Later a neighbour told me about him. Everybody knows him. His name is Percy Buttons. He calls at every house in the street once a month and always asks for a meal and a glass of beer.

beggar

  1.n. 乞丐,叫化子 eg: Beggars must not be choosers. 饥者难择食. die a beggar 穷死困死.
  2. v.使做乞丐,使变穷 ; 使…无用,难以… eg: I beg your pardon. I'll be beggared if ... 〔口语〕决不会;如 果…,让我变叫化子好了〔赌咒口吻〕. Her beauty beggars description. 她的美貌非笔 墨所能形容.

I gave him a meal. He ate the food and drank the beer. 拜访怎么说?
call at (a house a place) 访问(某家,某地) eg:I call b at the shop on my way home. 在回家的路上,我会去一趟商店. call on(sb)拜访某人 eg:I will call on him tomorrow. 我明天将去拜访他. call in来访 eg: Call in, or ring us up. 你可以亲自来访,也可以打电话来.

有无定冠词the, 有无定冠词 ,意义上竟会有天壤之别
  1.behindtime过了时刻 behind the times落在时代后面 eg: The train is ten minutes behind time.火车晚点十分钟. Such books are behind the times.这种书落后于时代了.
  2.by day在白天 by the day计日,论日,按日计 eg: They don't work by day but by night. 他们白天不工作,晚上工作. The bank calculates the interest on bills by the day. 银行按日计算帐息.
  3. by sea由海路 by the sea在海岸上,在海滨 eg: Marco Polo came to China by land and returned to Italy by sea.马可波罗由陆路来中国,由海路返回意大利. My friend spent this holiday in a rest home by the sea. 我朋友在海滨一个招待所度假.

  4. in hospital 生病住院 in the hospital 在医院 eg: Tom is in hospital because he has broken his rib.汤 姆在住院,因为他摔断了他的肋骨. His mother is working in the hospital. 他的妈妈在 医院工作.
  5. out of question 毋庸置疑 out of the question. 不可能,绝无希望 eg: His success is out of question. 他必成功. His success is out of the question.他必失败.
  6. in charge of负责,主管(表示主动) in the charge of由……负责,被……主管 eg: Dr Bethune was in charge of the operation.白求恩 大夫负责这次手术. This kindergarten is in the charge of a young girl. 这个幼儿园由一个年轻的姑娘负责.
