Time management is essential in our high-speed, always-on culture, yet most advice you'll find on this topic is pretty vague. "Setting goals" and "making time work for you" are, um, great, but so are practical efficiencies. Because oDesk is home to thousands of self-starting contract workers, we've seen many efficiency tr icks。 The headline promises five steps for time management, but they all come fro m a single principle: You can only do one thing at a time, so do it right。 Finish what you've started. This is the core idea: Where possible, working a single task to completion is more efficient. When you sit down to work, you spen d a few minutes just getting "settled in" before you're productive. If you jump fro m task to half-finished task all the time, that's a lot of minutes lost to "rolling up your sleeves." Think small. You can't always spend several hours working straight through o n a single big job. Don't think in those terms. Use a simple to-do list, and take e ach item to completion without interruption, unless something's literally on fire. An example for the job-seeker: It's not "I'll look for jobs this afternoon," it's checking email for replies to previous applications, scanning preferred job sites, writing co ver letters, and tweaking your resume for each solid lead, etc。 Quit stalling. Once you're organizing by simple components, it's easier to dive right into the small tasks. It takes a lot of warm up and deep breaths before yo u jump off a high-dive and we're less hesitant about walking down a flight of ste ps。 Play well with others. When you're working as part of a team, make sure yo u're prioritizing what you do to get the most important parts into the production li ne. Nothing's worse than having people stand around waiting for you to produce. In a job search, prioritize anyone who's waiting to hear from you; hiring manage rs looking for self-starters (and who isn't?) will appreciate and remember your pro
mptness。 Analyze your output. How could you have been more efficient? How much of your time goes to trivial, mundane work rather than the challenging stuff you enj oy and that your boss values? Job-seekers, log the time you spend at various jo b sites, and count how many real leads that effort yields. This way you can repri oritize your efforts for high value results. Why are you still lurking on that job bo ard that dried up two years ago? It's a multitasking world, and there's no changing it. But when a dozen things are clamoring for your attention, you can still organize them on your terms。
It really does pay to be a doctor, with an international survey showing the medic al profession is the most trusted, among the most admired and includes the most eligible marriage partners. By contrast, actors and musicians, along with journalists and advertisers, were a mong professionals that people trusted the least, and were also least likely to ch oose a partner from, according to a survey by Synovate, the market research ar m of Aegis Group plc. "Much of who we are is tied up in what we do in the hours from nine to five, a nd often way beyond," a Synovate statement said. "Asking someone what they do for a living is often the first question you ask the m; right after 'what's your name?'."
The survey polled about 5,500 respondents in Brazil, Canada, China, France, Mal aysia, South Africa and the United States. It asked people what makes for an admirable job, which professions they trust or do not, who is overpaid, and which profession they would prefer to marry. Sixteen percent nominated doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals as their preferred marriage partners, higher than any other profession. Other eligible--and admired--professions were education, at 14 percent, and scienc e and technology, at 10 percent. Educators and doctors were also voted the most trusted by an overwhelming 86 and 87 percent, followed by homemakers and those in science and technology. Only one percent picked retail professionals as partner-material, and those in me dia and marketing, as well as entertainers, did little better at two and three perce nt. 3%。 These professions were also among the least trusted by respondents, who, acros s the seven markets, picked the media as the single least trusted group.
Entertainers, along with corporate executives and lawyers, were voted as being th e most overpaid, while homemakers and educators were among those seen as b eing underpaid.
Forget about opposites attracting. We like people who look like us, b ecause they tend to have personalities similar to our own。 And, a new study suggests, the longer we are with someone, the mo re similarities in appearance grow。 Researcher sat Wake Forest University School of Medicine in WinstonSalem, North Carolina, found that workers who enjoyed more work flexibi lity were also less likely to say health problems affected their performanc e at work。 The test participants rated men and woman who were actual couples as looking alike and having similar personalities. Also, the longer the cou ples had been together, the greater the perceived similarities。 The researchers speculate that the sharing of experiences might affec t how couples look。 The idea that there is a connection between appearance and personal ity might seem odd at first, but there could be biological reasons for alin k, said study member Tony Little from the University of Liverpool in Engl and。

"Testosteroneis linked to masculine face shapes and it also affects be havior,"Little said. "Also, the face displays our emotions and over time e motional expressions may become written in the face." For example, someone who smiles a lot may develop lines and muscl es that are suggestive of someone who is happy。 The new study, to be detailed in the March issue of the journal Perso nality and Individual Differences, indicates that people home in on a vari ety of different features when using facial appearance to make decisions about someone's personality, and that the particular cues focused on cha nge from face to face. Vital to the decision, however, are eyes and smile s。 "Smiles are important social cues that may tell us whether or not so meone is friendly and eyes are also a traditional focus of attention," Littl e said。 Over allface shape can be important too. For example, the combinati on of masculine features, large chins, and dominant brow ridges can crea te an impression of disagreeableness and being unwilling to cooperate, Li ttle said。
