A
My father had returned from his business visit to London when I came in, rather late, to supper. I could tell at once that he and my mother had been discussing something. In that half-playful, half-serious way I knew so well, he said," How would you like to go to Eton?" "You bet, "I cried quickly catching the joke. Everyone knew it was the most expensive, the most famous of schools. You had to be entered at birth, if not before. Besides, even at 12 or 13, I understood my father. He disliked any form of showing off. He always knew his proper station in life, which was in the middle of the middle class, our house was medium-sized; he had avoided joining Royal Liverpool Golf Club and went to a smaller one instead; though once he had got a second-hand Rolls-Royce at a remarkably low price, he felt embarrassed driving it, and quickly changed it for an Austin 11
  00. This could only be his delightful way of telling me that the whole boarding school idea was to be dropped. Alas! I should also have remembered that he had a liking for being different from everyone else, if it did not conflict(冲突)with his fear of drawing attention to himself. It seemed that he had happened to be talking to Graham Brown of the London office, a very nice fellow, and Graham had a friend who had just entered his boy at the school, and while he was in that part of the world he thought he might just as well phone them. I remember my eyes stinging (刺痛) my hands shaking with the puzzlement of my feelings. There was excitement, and at the heart of great sadness. "Oh, he doesn't want to go away," said my mother, "You shouldn't go on like this.” "It's up to him," said my father. "He can make up his own mind.” 4

  41. The house the writer's family lived in was . A. the best they could afford C. for showing off
  42. His father sold his Roils-Royce because . A. it made him feel uneasy C. it was too expensive to possess B. it was too old to work well D. it was too cheap B. right for their social position D. rather small

  43. What was the writer's reaction to the idea of going to Eton? A. He was very unhappy. C. He was delighted.
  44. We can know from the passage that . A. Children who can go to Eton are very famous will C. It is very difficult for a child to get admitted by Eton D. Children don't have the right to decide whether they will go to Eton B. Children can go to Eton if they B. He didn't believe it. D. He had mixed feelings.
B
A Battery's Worst Nightmare(噩梦) (噩梦) Portable electronics that can be carried about easily are only as good as their batteries and, let's face it, batteries aren't very good, especially when compared with, say, petrol, which packs 100 times a battery's energy into an equal space. That's why a large group of mechanical engineers(centered at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, but with partners at other universities and companies) are hard at work in an effort to replace batteries with a tiny engine that runs on fuel. Imagine a battery-free life! When the fuel runs out in your laptop or mobile phone, you just fill up and go. The engineabout the size of a ten-cent coinstarts with a combustion chamber(燃烧室) that burns hydrogen(氢).Its tiny parts are etched onto silicon wafers(硅片)in the same manner that computer parts are imprinted onto integrated circuits 集成电路) The first engine is made up ( . of five wafers. And since these wafers could be produced in much the same way as computer chips, they could probably be produced quite cheaply. But the devil in all this nice detail is efficiency(效率).Tiny engine parts don't always behave like their scaled-up parts of the first engine. Something between the parts can slow down 5
the works, according to Columbia University professor Luc Frechette, one of the engine's designers. Extreme heat from the combustion chamber is also a problem, often leaking to other parts of the engine. The scientists' goal is to create an engine that will operate at 10 percent efficiencythat is,10 times better than batteries operate. Frechette says that a complete system, with all parts of place and working, will be set up in the next couple of years, but commercial models aren't like until at least the end of the next ten years.
  45. According to the passage, the title suggests that . A. batteries should be greatly improved C. the time of batteries will be gone forever solved
  46. What's the meaning of the underlined word" devil" in paragraph 3? A. problem B. advantage C. invention D. technique B. petrol will be used instead of batteries D. pollution caused by batteries must be

  47. What can we infer from the passage? A. The new invention doesn't need any fuel. B. The new engine has been produced in quantity. C. The new invention is much cheaper than the battery. D. The new engine needs to be improved before it's on sale. 48 What is the main purpose of this passage? A. To introduce a new invention to readers. B. To persuade readers not to use batteries. C. To show us how the new invention works. D. To declare when the engine will be on sale.
C
BeijingThe two-day Asia-Europe Meeting ( ASEM ) is expected to sign important documents today when it closes in Beijing. The meeting is a timely call for leaders from the two continents to find a solution to lift their countries,if not the world, out of the present global financial crisis(dangerous situation). Europe has been more determined than the United States to get rid of the world’s present economic system. It wants to build a new,or second-generation system. 6
Asia and Europe built a new, equal partnership in 1996 when the first ASEM was held. The ASEM has 45 members that account for 57 percent of the world’s population.Their foreign trade makes up more than 60 percent of the world’s trade. In 19
97,when Asia was hit by a financial crisis, the second ASEM in 1998 attempted to support its Asian members. The establishment of the ASEM Asian Financial Crisis Response Trust Fund helped these countries to rebuild financial system and remove the influence on their societies. The present financial crisis has affected more countries than the 1997 one.It is expected to inflict a heavy blow on the world. ASEM is not good at dealing with financial problems . Still , developed and developing countries of the ASEM think differently about solutions to the financial crisis. It is widely known that the European Union is divided over the issue. As a result,it is unrealistic to expect a cure-all for the crisis from the Beijing ASEM.Ding Yuanhong, former China ASEM senior official, said that without the presence of the US no plans are practical. But the ASEM can serve as a platform for the two continents to communicate and exchange ideas. Their leaders can compare notes and pool their wisdom. The most important thing is the message of confidence the meeting is expected to deliver to the world. (China Daily

  49. When did ASEM come into being? A.In 19
  96. B.In 19
  97. C.In l9
  98. D.In 20
  05.

50.What can we know about the USA from the passage? A.It will attend the next ASEM. B.It plays an important role in ASEM. C.It helped the Asian countries a lot in the 1997 financial crisis. D.It hasn’t bee
