The Purpose of learning English pronunciation
to have a better communication with native English speakers (for communication) to make your ears sharper for the sounds of English and to learn how to describe the way English sounds are pronounced and organized
(for teaching and research)
to appreciate the beauty of English speech sounds and intonation (for fun)
Elements of good English pronunciation
to pronounce correctly the individual speech sounds of English to pronounce correctly the speech sounds in their combinations in isolated words and in sentences to read and speak fluently with correct rhythm, including the correct placement of stresses and pauses and the linking of sounds according to the context to read and speak with appropriate intonation according to the context
Things to learn
44 English speech sounds, including 24 consonants and 20 vowels sound linking, pauses stress (including word stress and sentence stress) and rhythm strong forms and weak forms of English function words intonation
Ways of learning
listen and imitate do contextualized and communicative practices compare different English sounds; compare English and Chinese pronunciation features compare your pronunciation with that of the native English speakers monitor your own and others’ pronunciation performance in order to make adjustments and improvements
Types of English pronunciation
RP ? Received Pronunciation / GB ? General British, used by newsreaders of the BBC GA ? General American, used by newsreaders of the VOA
Phonetic symbols
IPA ? International Phonetic Alphabet
phoneme: the smallest unit of sound in a language which can distinguish two words e.g. / / in let and / / in net phonemic transcription: / / allophone: any of the different forms of a phoneme e.g. [ ] in leaf and [ ] in feel (both belong to / /) allophonic transcription: [ ]
Speech organs
tongue ? tip, blade, front, back lips ? upper lip, lower lip teeth ? upper teeth, lower teeth nose, alveolar ridge, hard palate, soft palate/velum, pharynx, larynx, vocal cords
Basic Concepts: vowels and consonants
vowels: sounds produced without obstruction of the air stream in the mouth. In producing them there is vibration of the vocal cords (voiced) consonants: sounds produced by some form of obstruction of the air passage (either voiced or voiceless) classification of consonants:
  1. according to manner of articulation;
  2. according to place of articulation;
  3. according to the presence or absence of voice (p. 3-
  4)
Basic Concepts: syllable and word stress
syllable: a unit in speech formed by a vowel with or without a consonant / consonants at the beginning or the end (e.g. improvement) word stress: different degree of force given to different syllables; in words with two or more syllables in English, one of the syllables will receive more stress than the others. (e.g. banana)
Assessment of the course
Assessment will be based on the course work (30%) and the final exam (70%). Course work includes your performance in class. Final exam includes a listening part (50%) and an oral part (50%).
