Some live alone because of divorce or the death of a partner. 46 According to a recent U. S. census (人口普查),25 percent of all households in the U. S. are made up of just one person. This is a dramatic change from the extended families of just a couple of generations ago. The typical person living alone is neither old nor lonely. 47 The majority of these people have chosen to live alone. They are responding to decreasing social pressure to get married and have a family. It’s now socially acceptable, even fashionable, to live alone. As people get better jobs and become financially independent, it becomes possible for them to maintain a one-person household. 48 However, people who do get married are marrying at a later age and divorcing more often. The number one reason given by most people for living alone is that they simply enjoy doing what they want when they want to do it. “Living alone is a luxury, ”says Nina Hagiwara, 3
  38. “Once you do it, you can’t ever go back to living with others. ”David C-Debaca,
46, agrees. 49 Children think that being grown up means being able to do exactly as they please. 50 The chance to discover whether that freedom is as wonderful as it sounds is a chance more and more Americans are taking. A There’s more pressure to get married nowadays. B The growing number of women with good jobs has done much to increase the number of people living alone. C However, even more people are living alone because they have chosen to. D It seems that many grown-ups today are realizing that childhood dream. E In fact, a quarter of the 23 million single people in the U. S. are under the age of
  35. F He says, “I like being by myself.

Shortly after I began a career in business, I learned that Carl Weatherup, president of PepsiCo (百事可乐公司), was speaking at the University of Colorado. I tracked down the person handling his schedule and managed to get myself an appointment. 。(
  46) So there I was sitting outside the university‘s auditorium, waiting for the president of PepsiCo. I could hear him talking to the students.。, and talking, and talking. (
  47) He was now five minutes over, which dropped my time with him down to 10 minutes. Decision time. I wrote a note on the back of my business card, reminding him that he had a meeting. “You have a meeting with Jeff Hoye at 2:30 p.m.” I took a deep breath, pushed open the doors of the auditorium and walked straight up the middle aisle (过道) toward him as he talked. Mr. Weatherup stopped. (
  48) Just before I reached the door, I heard him tell the group that he was running late. He thanked them for their attention, wished them luck and walked out to where I was now sitting, holding my breath. He looked at the card and then at me. “Let me guess,” he said. “You’re Jeff.” He smiled. (
  49) He spent the next 30 minutes offering me his time, some wonderful stories that I still use, and an invitation to visit him and his group in New York. But what he gave me that I value the most was the encouragement to continue to do as I had done. (
  50) When things need to happen, you either have the nerve to act or you don‘t. A I began breathing again and we grabbed (霸占) an office right there at school and closed the door.

  46. The term supermarket usually refers to an institution in the grocery retailing field. Most supermarkets emphasize price. Some use price offensively by featuring low prices in order to attract customers.Other supermarkets use price more defensively by relying on leader pricing to avoid a price disadvantage.Since supermarkets typically have very thin gross margins, they need light levels of inventory turnover to achieve satisfactory returns on invested capital. Supermarkets originated in the early 1930s.They were established by independents
  47. Supermarkets were an immediate success, and the innovation was soon adopted by chain stores. In recent decades

supermarkets have added various nonfood lines to provide customers with one ? stop shopping convenience and to improve overall gross margins. Today stores using the supermarket method of retailing are dominant in grocery retailing. However, different names are used to distinguish these institutions
  48. A superstore is a larger version of the supermarket. It offers more grocery and nonfood items
49.Many supermarket chains are emphasizing superstores in their new construction. Combination stores are usually even larger than superstore. They, too, offer more groceries and nonfoods than a supermarket but also most product lines found in a large drugstore. Some combination stores are joint ventures between supermarkets and drug chains such as Kroger and Sav ? on. For many years the supermarket has been under attack from numerous competitors. For example,a grocery shopper can choose among not only many brands of supermarkets but also various types of institutions (warehouse stores, gourmet shops, meat and fish markets, and convenience stores).Supermarkets have reacted to competitive pressures 50:Some cut costs and stressed low prices by offering more private brads and generic products and few customer services.Others expanded their store size and assortments by adding more nonfood lines (especially products found in drugstores),groceries attuned to a particular market area (foods that appeal to a specific ethnic group, example) and various service departments (including video rentals, for , restaurants, delicatessens, financial institutions, and pharmacies)。 A by size and assortment B than a conventional supermarket does C including building materials, office products, and,of course, groceries D attracting more customers with their low prices E primarily in either of two ways F to compete with grocery chains (

When we are introduced to new people, the author suggests,we should try to appear friendly and self confident. In general,he says,“People like people who like themselves.” On the other hand,we should not make the other person think we are too sure of ourselves. It is important to appear interested and sympathetic, realizing that the other person has his own needs, fears, and hopes. Hearing such advice, one might say,“But I ? m not a friendly, self ? confident person. That ? s not my nature. It would be dishonest for me to that way.” 48 .We can become accustomed to any changes we choose to make in our personality.“It is like getting used to a new car.It may be unfamiliar at first, but it goes much better than the old one.” But isn‘t it dishonest to give the appearance of friendly self ? confidence when we don’ actually t feel that way?Perhaps, but according to Dr.Zunin,“total honesty” is not always good for social relationships, especially during the first few minutes of contact. There is a time for everything, and a certain amount of play acting may be best for the first few minutes of contact with a stranger. That is not the time to complain about one ? s health or to mention faults one finds in other people. It is not the time to tell the whole truth about one ? s opinions and impressions. 49 .For a husband and wife or a parent and child, problems often arise during their first four minutes together after they have been apart.Dr.Zunin suggests that these first few minutes together be treated with care.If there are unpleasant matters to be discussed, they should be dealt with later. The author says that interpersonal relations should be taught as a required course in every school, along with reading, writing, and athematics.50 .That is at least as important as how much we know.
