(1 5 points)
Read the following text and answer questions 1-
  5. My Keyboard and Mouse Are Hurting Me Despite the promise of voice recognition , the vast majority of us still peck at a keyboard and push around a mouse to get our computers to do what we want. 888
Voice recognition , except for those unable to use their hands , remains a slower , lessproductive input technology. I recently went on an odyssey( 冒 险 旅 行 ) in search of the perfect input device , tired of the wear and tear on my body that my current setup was causing. I was periodically pinching nerves on the same side of my neck as the arm I used to reach for my ergonomic mouse. Th巳 pain would last only a day or two , but it was a warning. Computer mice cause the most computer injuries. says Deborah Quilter , author of The
Reρetitive
Strain Injury Recovery Book. From having previously tested out

and trackballs , I concluded it wasn't my mouse itself that was causing me problems but my repetitively reaching for it. So I hunted around for keyboards with built-in pointing devices , which would let me keep my arms close to my body , and for other ways to heal mysel f. The good news is that I believe I' ve succeeded , even though I didn' t find the perfect solution. The bad n巳ws is that my solution may not work for you. Though we all share much of our physiology , we' re all different as wel l. On the other hand , perhaps one of the products I looked at that didn' t work for me will work for you. Perfection could be had by finding a company to design a single keyboard to my exact specifications. No such luc k. DS International of Glendale , Ariz.

can help. What' s more , despite the ergonon巾s (人体工程学) of pointing
devices built into keyboards , you can' t move around as quickly with them as you can with a separate mouse. Keyboard shortcuts are one solution , though they require you to memorize them. At the most basic , for instance , pressing the Control and S keys saves a file , preventing you from having to move the mouse pointer to the File menu and select Save. Questions 1-5

  1. How does the author look at voice recognition?

  2. Why did the author look for the perfect input device?
  3. According to the author , what actually caused the computer injuries?
  4. What kind of keyboards did the author find to solve the problem that a computer mouse causes?
889

  5. Why don' t we have the luck to find a company to design a single keyboard to our exact specification? Passage 2 (1 0 points) Many articles and books have been written in recent years about culture in
organizations , usually referred to as "Corporate Culture. " The dictionary defines culture as "the act of developing intellectual and moral faculties , especially through education. " This waiting will use a slightly different definition of culture: "the moral , social , and behavioral norms of an organization based on the beliefs , attitudes , and priorities of its members. " The terms "advanced culture" or "primitive culture" could apply to the first definition , but not the latter. Every organization has its own unique culture or value set. Most organizations don' t consciously try to create a certain culture. The culture of the organization is typically created unconsciously , based on the values of the top management or the founders of an orgamzat lOn. Hewlett-Packard is a company that has , for a long time , been conscious of its culture (The HP Way) and has worked hard to maintain it over the years. Hewlett-Packard' s corporate culture is based on
  1) respect for others ,
  2) a sense of community , and
  3) plain hard work. It has been developed and maintained through extensive training of managers and employees. HP's growth and success over the years has been due in large part to its culture. Another successful company that expends a lot of energy in maintaining its workplace culture is Southwest Airlines. Southwest is the only major airline in the U. S. that has been profitable in each of the last five years. It also has a good reputation as an employer. Herb Kelleher , Southwest' s CEO , indicated how Southwest maintained its culture: "First of all , it starts with hiring. We are looking for a particular type of person , regardless of which job category it is. We are looking for attitudes that are positive and for people who can lend themselves to causes. We want folks who have a good sense of humor and people who are interested in performing as a team and take joy in team results instead of individual accomplishments. " "Another important thing is to spend a lot of time with your
peopl巳and
to communicate
with them in a variety of ways. And a large part of it is demeanor. Sometimes we tend to lose sight of the fact that demeanor the way you appear and the way you act- is a form
of communication. We want our people to feel fulfilled and to be happy , and we want our management to radiate the demeanor that we are proud of our people. "
890
In both of these examples , the top management of the companies were vigilant about maintaining their cultures. The behavior rules and boundaries are relatively clear and
communicated often. However , this is not typica l. I believe most organizations operate with a diversity of cultures. This is especially true considering the increasing worldwide mobility of people and cultures and values. Mark statements
