Passage 1 Is language , like food , a basic human need? Judging from the drastic experiment of Frederick
II in the 13th century , it may be. Hoping to discover what language a child would
speak if he heard no mother tongues , he told the nurses to keep silent. All the infants died before the first year. But clearly there was more than language deprivation here. What was missing was good mothering. Without good mothering , in the first year of life especially , the capacity to survive is seriously affected. Today no such drastic deprivation exists as that ordered by Frederick. Nevertheless , some children are still backward in speaking. Most often the reason for this is that the mother is insensitive to the cues and signals of the infant , whose brain is programmed to mop up language rapidly. There are critical times , it seems , when children learn more readily. If these sensitive periods are neglected , the ideal time for acquiring skills passes and they might never be learned so easily again. Linguists suggest that speech milestones are reached in a fixed sequence and at a constant age , but there are cases where speech has started late in a child who eventually turns out to be of high IQ (I nt elligence Quotien t) . Recent evidence suggests that an infant is born with the capacity to speak. What is special about man' s brain , compared with that of the monkey , is the complex system which enables a child to connect the sight and feel o f, say , a teddy-bear with the sound pattern "teddy- bear". But speech has to? be triggered , and this depends on interaction between the mother and 1187
the child , where the mother recognizes the cues and signals in the child's babbling , clinging , grasping , crying , smiling , and responds to them. Insensitivity of the mother to these signals dulls the interaction because the child gets discouraged and sends out only the obvious signals. Sensitivity to the child' s non-verbal cues is essential to the growth and development of language.

13. By "critical times" the author means A. difficult periods in the child' slife B. moments when the child becomes critical towards its mother C. important stages in the child' s development D. times when mothers often neglect their children

Passage 2 After a hectic day of work and play , the body needs to rest. Sleep is necessary for good health. During this time , the body recovers from the activities of the previous day. The rest that you get while sleeping enables your body to prepare itself for the next day. There are four levels of sleep , each being a little deeper than the one before. As you sleep , your muscles relax little by little. Your heart beats more slowly , and your brain slows down. After you reach the fourth level , your body shifts back and forth from one level of
前eep to the other.
Although your mind slows down , from time to time you will dream. Scientists who study sleep state that when dreaming occurs , your eyeballs begin to move more quickly (although your eyelids are closed). This stage of sleep is called REM , which stands rapid eye movement.
If you have trouble falling asleep , some people recommend breathing very slowly and
very deeply. Other people believe that drinking warm milk will help make you drowsy. There is also an old suggestion that counting sheep will put you to sleep!
